Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Which is the organization dealing with the Surface water data related issues in Gujarat?
Ans: State Water Data Center (SWDC) is dealing with Surface water data related issues in Water Resources Department.
Q2: What is Mission of SWDC?
Ans:
  • To develop interactive computerized data bank
  • Hydrological data collection and its management
  • Providing authenticated hydrological data to all eligible and legitimate users in public and private sector
Q3: What are the objectives of Hydrology project?
Ans:
  • In short to improve the institutional arrangements, technical capabilities and physical facilities for measurement, validation, collection, analysis, transfer and dissemination of all kind of hydro-meteorological data.
  • To upgrade and expand the infrastructure for observation of all kinds of hydro meteorological data.
  • To develop comprehensive, easily accessed and user friendly data bases.
  • To introduce standard procedures for data collection, processing, validation and management.
  • To extend and promote the sustained and effective use of the Hydrological Information System (HIS).
Q4: What is Hydrology Project-I?
Ans: It was an endeavor to improve institutional and organizational arrangement, technical capabilities and physical facilities available for measurement, validation, analysis, transfer and dissemination of Hydrological, Hydro meteorological and Water Quality data and basic water resources evaluation within the concerned agencies. The concept of the project is to assist the Central Government and the participating State Water resources agencies in the development of Valid, Comprehensive, Interactive, easily accessed and user friendly data base covering all important aspects of the Hydrological and Hydro-meteorological cycle and to strengthening of the capabilities of the institutions concerned. Provision of Data bases is regarded as a service to all legitimate entities involved in management and development of water resources.
Q5: What is Hydrology Project-II
Ans: The objective of Hydrology Project Phase II is 'to extend and promote the sustained and effective use of the Hydrological Information System (HIS) by all potential users concerned with water resources planning and management, both public and private, thereby contributing to improved productivity and cost-effectiveness of water-related investment in the participating states / agencies'. This is a multi state/agency project. Gujarat is one of the participating states.
Q6: What is the total data availability of Surface water related hydrological and hydro meteorological observations in the State?
Ans: Data Availability at State Water Data Centre:
Sr. No. Surface Water Observations stations in the State Data Availability
1 Rainfall Stations (daily) 1961-2012
2 Weather Stations 1999-2011/12
3 River Gauging Stations 1983-2012
4 Water Quality Stations 1998-2012/13
Q7: Which Software used for Data entry, Validation and storage?
Ans:
  1. SWDES(Surface Water Data Entry System): It is very essential to have customized software like SWDES which is dedicated to the needs of bulk entry of meteorological and surface water quality and quantity data, because:
    • The bulk of meteorological and hydrologic quantity and quality data is observed manually from a variety of instruments and equipment.
    • This observations generating large quantity of data on a continuous basis.
    • The data thus collected has to be properly entered on to the magnetic media for further processing.
  2. HYMOS (Hydrological Modeling System):
HYMOS software is generally used for surface water data processing and analysis work, a licensed software.
    • HYMOS is an information system for storage, processing and presentation of hydrological and environmental data.
    • It combines an efficient database structure with powerful tools for data entry validation checks, analysis, retrival and presentation.
  3. WISDOM (Water Information System and Data Online Management):
    • It is used to store the hydrological and Meteorological data exported from other data entry and processing software like SWDES, HYMOS, GWDES, GEMS and IMD formats etc.
Q8: What is the procedure for obtaining Hydrological data?
Ans: Request letter for obtaining data is to be sent to Superintending Engineer, State Water Data Center Circle, State Water Data Center, Sector -8, Gandhinagar (e-mail id se-swdc-gnr@gujarat.gov.in) The data is provided to the users / stake holders on chargeable. After the amount is deposited, the data will be provided to the concerned
Q9: Is there any concession to students and Researchers?
Ans: Yes, Data are disseminated at free of cost to the students of Academic Institutes for Research / Study purpose. Similarly data are disseminated free of cost to the state and central Government organizations.
Q10: How much time will it take to obtain data after all formalities are completed?
Ans: Within a week after the charges are deposited.
Q11: what is HDUG?
Ans: HDUG (Hydrology Data User Group) is a formal body, formed by the department, whose main function is to assist in identifying areas for data collection, management and inspection of sites
